Founded in 1989 by John Henderson, British Hardwood Tree Nursery (BHTN) began as a family-run business in the Lincolnshire Wolds. John and his son Andrew, who later succeeded him, were deeply involved in every aspect of growing and selling plants, fostering a strong understanding of plant care and customer service. Over time, BHTN built a loyal local customer base, supplying UK-grown plants.
Under Andrew’s leadership, the company expanded its offerings to include self-grown and contract-grown plants, along with planting accessories. BHTN serviced increasingly larger planting schemes, eventually with its own woodland planting teams. Despite discontinuing this service, BHTN retained this valuable knowledge within their team, meaning advice given to clients is grounded in experience.
At the turn of the century, BHTN relocated to its current site, allowing for investment in warehousing and staffing. Today, BHTN specializes in the supply of contract-grown bare root and cell-grown plants, working with select nurseries to ensure high-quality stock and a diverse plant range for clients.
In June 2023, Origin Enterprises acquired BHTN, and Andrew passed leadership to Gary Rogers, who became Managing Director.
Commenting on the upcoming season, Gary said “This season marks our 35th anniversary. 35 years and millions of trees later – it’s an amazing legacy to be part of.
"Demand remains high for both plants and protection, driven in part by improved access to environmental grants and an increase in initiatives to combat climate change. This means pre-orders for our 35th season are at a record level.
"We continue to focus on delivering exceptional customer service, something our founders recognised early on as vitally important to long term relationships and I am both keen and proud to build on these. With that in mind, I am pleased to say we have an exceptional team in place for the season ahead, who are all set to start shipping orders out once the bare root season kicks off.”
Looking ahead, BHTN aims to continue to prioritize plant welfare, customer satisfaction, and environmental sustainability, including offering more biodegradable options. To mark thirty-five years in business, BHTN will share thirty-five trusted plants and products, along with new favourites on social media.
BHTN would like to thank clients, old and new, for a fantastic 35 years and look forward to continuing to work together into the future.
