The EcoWrap is a simple, robust, cost effective form of protection delivering a microclimate and animal protection for young broadleaf and hedging plants that is easily recycled at end of life.
Made in Britain by Tubex, the market leader in tree protection, the EcoWrap is made of extruded polypropylene.
These twin walled tree guards have a vertical split that produces a natural overlap, retaining their shape and expanding as the plant grows, avoiding strangulation.
EcoWraps are best suited to slender plants or whips, e.g. young broadleaf trees and hedging plants.
The translucent material maximises light transmission for photosynthesis and their design means they retain heat and moisture around the plant – creating a microclimate. This, combined with protection from rabbits and chemical spraying, means better survival rates.
Delivered in nests of five wraps (35mm, 37mm, 40mm, 42mm and 45mm diameter), they can expand by +25mm as the plant grows. Lightweight to move around a planting scheme, they are quick and easy to install.
Photodegradable, the EcoWrap offers a minimum of 3 seasons protection. At the end of their useful life their design means they can easily be removed for recycling, without breaking into lots of small pieces. Eligible for the Tubex Collection and Recycling Scheme the EcoWrap can go on to a second life as more tree protection, creating a virtuous circle.
We recommend wearing gloves when installing EcoWraps (or any tree protection). See the installation tab for more information.

Protects young plants from bark-stripping and browsing animals.

Herbicide protection
The wrap protects from herbicide spray.

Light transmission
Creates a mini greenhouse effect, encouraging growth.

Expanding wrap
The wrap 'expands' with the tree, allowing it to easily release itself.
Lifespan

UV stabilised
Provides minimum 3 years protection.

Twin walled
Delivers best strength to weight ratio.

Recyclable
Through local supplier or via the Tubex Collection & Recycling Scheme.
Installation

Nested
For ease of movement around site.

Easy removal
Opens easily to remove from plant for recycling.
Height
Identify which damaging agent (animal) you wish to protect your plants from.
This will influence the height of your protection and the cane to support it.
60cm EcoWraps can help protect against voles and rabbits.

Diameter types
EcoWraps are nested in 5's (one inside the other), to save space and time when moving plant protection around a site.
Within one nest of five wraps you will find a 35mm, 37mm, 40mm, 42mm and 45mm diameter wrap.
These narrow diameters make them most suitable for young, slender plants.

Plant
Planting bare root or cell grown plants is a straightforward task, however, do not attempt to plant if the ground is frozen or waterlogged. Find a suitable position for your plants, bearing in mind future growth and potential height and spread at maturity.
Bare rooted or cell grown plants can be ‘notch’ planted in 3 steps:

1. Begin by inserting the blade of a spade into the ground. Push the spade handle away from you and then bring it back towards you. Once you remove the spade, you will see that you have created a cavity or ‘notch’ in the ground.
2. For bare root - place the plant roots within the cavity and shake to ensure that all of the roots are in the cavity and pointing downwards.
For cell grown – place the cell gently into the ground. Ensure the top of the plug (the soil surrounding the roots) is positioned at 2 to 4cm below the surface to avoid drying out.
3. Fill the cavity with soil. Use your heel to firm the soil around the plant to remove any air pockets. Once planted, give them a good water if practical to do so.
You are now ready to install your support and protection.
Support

1. After planting, position the cane on the windward side between 2cm to 5cm from the base of the plant if there are strong prevailing winds. This means the cane will hold the EcoWrap up rather than stressing the plant.
2. Push or hammer the cane into the ground with a stake driver or mallet (ideally knocking 1/3 of its height into the ground). Ensure it is vertical (particularly important on sloping ground). The top of the cane should be above the top rim of the EcoWrap.
Protect
1. Remove an EcoWrap from the nest of 5 (wearing protective gloves). Position the EcoWrap over the tree and the cane, making sure not to damage any lateral branches.
2. Push the EcoWrap gently into the ground 1cm to 2cm. This forms a safe herbicide barrier and deters vermin from burrowing under the shelter.
3. Remember to plan for removal of the cane and EcoWrap for recycling once the plant is established.

Plan for removal and recycling of your protection once plants are established. More information on recycling is available here.
