Vinewraps have been especially designed for viticulture, allowing easy access to the vine for maintenance as well as providing plant protection.

Tip: Vinewraps (75-90mm dia) are also used as a cost-effective solution for forestry planting schemes of young, bushier plants such as conifers (i.e. where the narrower Easywraps (50-65mm dia) and Fruitwraps (65-80mm dia) are unsuitable).

The Tubex Vinewrap is a twin-walled tube that has been split vertically, creating a natural overlap, enabling it to wrap around a vine and expand as the plant grows.

It can also be easily removed and reinstalled, allowing for bud rubbing and inspection.

Made of recyclable polypropylene (not PVC), Vinewraps help protect against small animals, herbicide spray and accidental strimmer damage.

UV stabilised to offer at least 2 years protection, this, along with the mini microclimate created inside the wrap, means better survival rates for your vines in their early years.

Benefits

  • Helps protect from voles and rabbits
  • Protects from herbicide spray and accidental strimmer damage
  • Delivers microclimate
  • Easy installation and removal
  • Can be recycled

Installation

  • Plant your young vine.
  • Push a cane/metal rod into the ground next to the vine.
  • Separate a Vinewrap from the nest of 2 and slot it over both the plant and the cane/rod (if using), ensuring the wrap is pushed firmly into the ground.
  • Plan for removal and recycling at end of life once the plant is established. More information on recycling is available here.

Diameter types

Vinewraps are nested in 2’s (one inside the other), to save space and time when moving plant protection around a site.

Within one nest of two wraps you will find a 75mm and a 90mm diameter Vinewrap.

Their narrow diameters make them most suitable for young vines, or small conifers.

Plant

Planting bare root or cell grown plants is a straightforward task, however, do not attempt to plant if the ground is frozen or waterlogged. Find a suitable position for your plants, bearing in mind future growth and potential height and spread at maturity.

Bare rooted or cell grown plants can be ‘notch’ planted in 3 steps:

Installation

1. Begin by inserting the blade of a spade into the ground. Push the spade handle away from you and then bring it back towards you. Once you remove the spade, you will see that you have created a cavity or ‘notch’ in the ground.

2. For bare root - place the plant roots within the cavity and shake to ensure that all of the roots are in the cavity and pointing downwards.
For cell grown – place the cell gently into the ground. Ensure the top of the plug (the soil surrounding the roots) is positioned at 2 to 4cm below the surface to avoid drying out.

3. Fill the cavity with soil. Use your heel to firm the soil around the plant to remove any air pockets. Once planted, give them a good water if practical to do so.

You are now ready to install your support and protection.

Support

Support

1. After planting, position the cane or rod (if using) on the windward side if there are strong prevailing winds, and between 2cm to 5cm from the base of the plant.

2. Push or hammer the cane or rod into the ground with a mallet (ideally knocking 1/3 of its height into the ground). Ensure it is vertical (particularly important on sloping ground). The top of the cane or rod should be above the top rim of the Vinewrap.

Protect

1. Position the Vinewrap over the plant and the cane/rod, making sure not to damage any lateral branches.

2. Push the Vinewrap into the ground 1cm to 2cm. This forms a safe herbicide barrier and deters vermin from burrowing under the shelter.

Installation

Plan for removal and recycling of shelters at end of life once the tree is established. More information on recycling is available here.
